Sebring Middle School Student Dress Policy
Approved June 1999 by Highlands County School Board (Revised: 8/1/00)
We believe that all students have the right to a safe, healthy school environment. We believe that all students have the responsibility to dress appropriately and observe basic standards of cleanliness and good grooming. A students dress and appearance should not cause disruption, distract from the educational process or create a health or safety concern for himself or others. ( HCSB Policy)
HATS: No hats, head coverings, or distracting head ornaments.
SHIRTS & BLOUSES: Must be long enough to be tucked in and not "pull up and/or out." The manufacturer logo or emblem must be no larger than the size of a student ID card and no wording or pictures are allowed on the front or back. (SMS shirts can be worn but must contain the words "Sebring Middle School" or bear the "S with lightning bolt"). Sleeveless, strapless, low-cut/deep scoop neck, see-through mesh, tank-tops and tight fitting shirts would not be appropriate attire for school. Students will be allowed to wear an unbuttoned over-shirt as a "layered look" over a shirt that is appropriately tucked in.
PANTS, SHORTS, SKIRTS, AND SKORTS: These items must worn at the natural waist and no shorter than mid-thigh in length (including slits). These closthes should be zipped, no more than one size larger than the normal size required and hemmed no longer the heel of the shoes. Manufacturer labels on these items can be no larger than 3" x 4". Track, gym, boxer, biker shorts, or any clothes that are tight-fitting or see-through would not be appropriate attire for school.
DRESSES: Dresses must cover the chest and underarm area, have sleeves, and be no shorter than mid-thigh. If the chest or underarm area is not sufficently covered, a blouse or shirt must be worn under the dress. Tight fitting, see-through dresses would not be appropriate attire for school.
OUTERWEAR: Jackets, Sweaters, Sweatshirts, and Coats may be worn as required for comfort due to weather conditions. Clothing that meets the "Dress Code", as described above must be worn under any item of outerwear. Students will be asked to store outerwear after arriving on campus IF it causes a distraction in the school environment or hinders a child s participation in school functions and activities.
SHOES: Shoes must be closed toe and worn at all times.
ACCESSORIES: Should be kept to a minimum and jewelry must not pierce the skin except the ears. Jewelry or buttons with words, phrases, symbols, pictures, or graphics which are indecent, swear, suggestive, or are drug, alcohol or gang-related would not be appropriate attire for school. Choke, wallet chains and chain belts are not allowed. Regular bookbags are acceptable. Bookbags on wheels are not appropriate for crowded hallways. Parents are encouraged to monitor the content and weight of their child's bookbag.
DRESS CODE VIOLATIONS & DISCIPLINARY ACTION:
- First Offense: Student receives a documented verbal warning with a copy of the dress code.
- Second Offense: Student receives a final, written warning.
- Each Additional Offense: Will result in one hour, after-school detention.
School-based administrators have the final authority to determine when personal appearance and dress do not meet Board and school standards and also have the authority to take appropriate action (HCSB Policy).
